A splendid book  Apr 16, 2010
Father Thomas McDermott, O.P., has written a splendid book about the mystical thought and spiritual teachings of Saint Catherine of Siena (c. 1347-1380), Dominican saint, mystic, Doctor of the Church, and one of the most remarkable women of all times. Although much fine Catherinian scholarship has been produced over the years, her thought has occasionally been viewed as opaque, dense, and perhaps even too deeply mysterious for the layperson. Indeed, Catherine's profound images of the scaloni, the Christ-bridge and other metaphors can get rather confusing. McDermott's singular accomplishment is to make her thought and teachings available to all interested parties, the layperson and the scholar. In some sense, he comes across as a modern day Blessed Raymond of Capua,O.P., who was Catherine's confessor, biographer, and friend. McDermott clearly understands and appreciates the thought of his Dominican sister Catherine. He masterfully weaves together a variety of Catherine's complex theological notions into clear, concise and accessible concepts. McDermott's book allows the reader to better grasp how Catherine understood God, and in the process, manages to enrich our own understanding as well. One can only imagine how much joy this book would have brought to the 14th century followers of Catherine, whom they called "Mamma Caterina,' for the careful, respectful and intelligent way McDermott presents her spiritual teachings to a contemporary audience. Solid and highly recommended reading for any religious scholar  Jan 13, 2009
Many thoughts from many people make up much of any type of belief today. "Catherine of Siena: Spiritual Development in Her Life and Teaching" examines the life of the woman, and the teachings of this lesser known but highly important spiritual leader of the fourteenth century. In a time where women were still not thought of much more than property and rarely had a voice in the church, she made her mind hold value. Enhanced with indexes, bibliography, and comprehensive notes, "Catherine of Siena" is solid and highly recommended reading for any religious scholar.

Catherine of Siena: Spiritual Development in Her Life and Teaching

Fr.McDermott's book on St. Catherine is first of all a delight to read. Its prose and the author's generous use of Catherine's own words leads the reader into true contemplation and prayer. This book is a text book for students who want to learn about Catherine but it is also a spiritual book for one's own advancement in the love of prayer. Fr. McDermott lays out the teachings of Catherine on the meaning of the human person in relation to our struggle with sin and our desire for God. In other words, the book contains the drama of our human condition. One comes away from the text with a new respect for Catherine and admiration for the author of this well researched and written volume. Buy it and savor it.
