Reviews - What do our customers think?
where's the attraction?  May 24, 2009
Having read a 'Carnel Agreement' which I enjoyed, I purchased this book in the hope that it would live up to my expectations. It failed to do so however, for several reasons. For one, I like a romance story to be the core of the book and other sub-plots to evolve around it, highlighting the characters ' development in reference to each other. In this book there's little interaction of substance between the hero and heroine, with endless pages written about how our hero tries to uncover the culprit behind the threatening letters his beloved receives. A lot of these scenes are meaningless, as both our hero and heroine put their lives in unecessary danger simply so that the book contains some kind of plot. Needless to say . these close shaves are a consequence of the heroine's reckless, headstrong nature.

As for the heroine who goes by the name of Amanda Halverston (an e should have been added to the suffix of that name) what can I say? She has little more than her beauty to recommend her as she is nothing more than a bundle of contadictions. Rhys, the hero, is admittedly a reputed rake but he has nonetheless saved Amanda's life on more than one occasion. On one occasion in fact he shielded her with his body and consequently received the bullet himself, while on a second occasion he was stabbed in yet another attempt to protect her. You would expect a little gratitude at least after such magnanimous acts of courage. No. Amanda persits in thinking the worst of him and treats him with utter disdain. She has a more waspish tongue than my tyranical mother in law, and when the two are caught in a compromising situation and he does the gentelmanly thing by proposing to her in order to save her reputation , she holds him to blame. Ugh! Even on the wedding night she starts a harrangue which drives him away. Why he is in love with her is a mystery. Why don't romance writers delve more into the emotions instead of presenting such one dimentional characters, characters who in every sense seem unworthy of love?

By the time they consumate this turbulent relationship, I have no sympathy for Amanda and feel frustrated with Rhys' obsession with her. I feel totally datached during the love scenes and by the end of it regret its purchase.

4.5 Blue Ribbons from Romance Junkies!  Jan 29, 2009
Amanda Halverston has a love/hate relationship with Rhys Stanton. Knowing him for the rake he is, Amanda has avoided him for months and would continue to do so if it weren't for the letters she has been receiving. When the first extortion letter arrives, Amanda ignores it thinking it to be a joke. The joke is on Amanda, because in ignoring the letter she is accosted the following night. Realizing that whoever is sending her the threatening letter just might be serious, she turns to Rhys for help and is willing to make a bargain.

In the five months since he and Amanda were thrown together helping her sister uncover a nefarious plot to sell young women, Rhys has done nothing but think about her. The stubborn woman refuses to have anything to do with him and while he is a confirmed bachelor through and through, Rhys can't help but wish that Amanda desires him as much as he desires her. When she asks for his help to find out who is sending her vile extortion letters, Rhys offers Amanda a bargain, which Amanda refuses. Or does she?

A PERSISTENT ATTRACTION hits very close to home for me even though it is a historical romance - and a well written one at that. It made me think back to my teenager days and my high school crush. I loved him but hated him. He liked me one day, hated me the next. In between my own recollections, A PERSISTENT ATTRACTION became a novel of fortitude, with the plot and characters remaining in my mind long after I read the last word. Silvia Violet has skillfully taken two characters and made them personally engaging. From the ballrooms to the back alleys, her setting took me through a plethora of emotions. I flushed when Rhys and Amanda were together, I rolled my eyes at Rhys' bargaining skills, and I smiled when all was right in their world. Rhys and Amanda claimed my heart like they claimed each other's.

A PERSISTENT ATTRACTION released in February 2008 from Samhain Publishing. It is the second book of Ms. Violet's Regency Intrigue series but can be read completely as a stand alone. Of course, as a reviewer I recommend reading the first installment, A Carnal Agreement, just to meet Amanda and Rhys!
