 | Very Helpful Mar 8, 2009 |
I began my 34 years as a Jr. High school teacher and assistant principal in 1956, the day afte I was discharged from the US Army. During those 34 years I only heard the term ADD(no H at that time) once and that was from a mother. Most of our faculty thought it was some new terminology she had created to justify her son's unacceptable actions.
The only "correction tools" available for us at that time were: in or out of school suspension, after school detention, and sessions with the "board of education." In the 1980's my district began an extensive in-house staff development program, but the existence of ADHD was never acknowledged. Today the district has a very positive aggressive program keyed to identifying and supporting teachers of ADHD students including special staffing.
Dr. Atwood's book offers many ideas that will help frustrated parents and teachers of ADHD students. His three levels of involvement: parent, the school and mental health professionals is the ideal approach. Unfortunately today, many school boards are interested in keeping taxes low, being re-elected, and multimillion dollar sport programs and facilities. As a result funding for ADHD assistance is frequentyl limited.
I believe the strong points of the book are the offerings of intervention plans for specific instances and ways to monitor and adjust undesired behaviors. It is an easy book to follow, not loaded with ovewhelming techincal jargon. His book should be read by parents and those who work with ADHD students.
I would be remiss if I did not mention that my military "career" was also as a dental assistant in the same major US Army dental clinic with Bob Atwood in 1955-1956 in Nuremberg, Germany. At that time there could not have been a better assignment for lowly draftees. We were a small group working with both American and German dentists, an 8-5 job with most evenings and weekends free. It was a very interesting time to be in an old, historic major city of Germany. Through the miracle of the internet I was able to locate him after 52 years.
