Item Description... For many people, the name of Archbishop Rembert Weakland brings to mind only connotations of scandal the titillating tale of a prominent priest disgraced. But that whiff of dishonor barely begins to tell the whole story. / In these pages Archbishop Weakland recounts his life from his childhood in rural Pennsylvania to his retirement from the archbishopric in 2002 at the age of 75, all in the context of the Church that he long served. Weakland takes readers with him to Rome, where he discovered the splendor of a whole new intellectual world, and then to New York for his extensive musical study at Julliard and Columbia University. From his early days in the priesthood to his struggles with pontiffs, Weakland details how he learned to become a leader and minister to his people and how his famously liberal beliefs affected his ministry. While he presents an honest account of the scandal he is so often recognized for, the complete picture beyond rumor and accusation may come as a surprise to many readers. / Throughout his memoir Weakland describes with poignant honesty his psychological, spiritual, and sexual growth. Candid and engaging, A Pilgrim in a Pilgrim Church offers a fascinating inside look at both Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II even as it tells the story of a life fully lived. |

Reviews - What do our customers think?

| One wonders if the good Archbishop might use his book royalties to return the hush money he stole from his parishioners. Unbelievable hubris. Good riddance. | | | | Rembert Yes, Kindle No May 9, 2010 |
Brother Rembert was one of the last great hopes for the survival of the Spirit of Vatican II. Mahoney is retiring, Bernardin is gone. The Church heirarchy is now so inbred it is virtually frozen in one mindset. Pick a Bishop, any Bishop... and you'll find Rome's sheep, not shepherds of the local Church. But what can one expect when the Curia picks Bishops. They pick people who think like them and will toe the Curial line.
this site, I do not blame you for the price of the Kindle version, but who in their right minds would buy one at over $19.25? One can only hope that when the paperback comes out the price will come down to something realistic. Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company set the price ridiculously high, so I hope they don't sell any. Kindle owners should boycott the bullies. Maybe $9.99 is too little, but double that just simply isn't worth it. I guess Eerdmans just isn't interested in electronic sales. | | | | An HONEST autobiography by ONE of the MOST IMPORTANT CATHOLICS of the last 100 years! Feb 19, 2010 |
What an amazing life!
What an important part of Church History he is!
From simple beginnings to the highest offices of the Roman Catholic Church, this wonderful man is neither saint nor sinner, but rather a sincere and human pilgrim making his journey toward god. He falls and he gets up again. He learns and develops and uses his experiences and hard earned wisdom to do good and improve his world.
He writes beautifully and one is captivated by his story.
While I believe that anyone who enjoys autobiographies will enjoy this work as well; I think it might be of extra interest to musicians, religious and clergy persons (and especially gay religious and clergy persons or their friends/families), and Catholics trying to get a grip on what has been happening to the Church.
Blessings on you all. | | | | Collegiality under John Paul II Feb 6, 2010 |
| There is a great rush, by some, to add the title great to the late John Paul II. History has a way of giving us perspective and perhaps we should wait until a full picture emerges. Archbishop Weakland, like the great men of history, struggled with his life and his spirituality. In this candid accounting of his own journey, he gives us a personal insight into the workings of the Vatican under John Paul II. His reflections and insight can be a starting point for better understanding our own journey of faith. | | | | A MUST READ FOR ALL MATURE CATHOLICS Nov 14, 2009 |
