If you know nothing about history of colonialism and/or Southeast Asia, let it be one of your first choices: the French school of Far Eastern Research (Ecole Francaise d'Extreme-Orient) has been the leading Western institute to study early Chinese, Southeast Asian and Indian cultures, arts, and languages. The great French scholars helped to establish the grandeur of Far Eastern civilizations and made them known to the Western peoples. Very complicated history of their investigation is represented here in the 'solemn', if I may use the word, manner. The authors reconstruct the history of the School through the lifes and deeds of scholars who dedicated themselves to search for truth about the Orient.
I think this monograph helps to avoid the label of colonialism concerning the School as their members loved the peoples and cultures they studied.
The book is easy to read and has many beautiful colour pictures.
