Item Description... Saxon math programs produce confident students who are not only able to correctly compute, but also to apply concepts to new situations. These materials gently develop concepts, and the practice of those concepts is extended over a considerable period of time. This is called "incremental development and continual review." Material is introduced in easily understandable pieces (increments), allowing students to grasp one facet of a concept before the next one is introduced. Both facets are then practiced together until another one is introduced. This feature is combined with continual review in every lesson throughout the year. Topics are never dropped but are increased in complexity and practiced every day, providing the time required for concepts to become totally familiar. The teacher's manual employs a unique instructional format. It contains daily lessons, each of which includes pre-class preparation instructions, a list of materials, and the entire scripted lesson. Scripted lessons provide the parent with questioning strategies and language designed to help children understand mathematical concepts. Since the teacher's manual is nonconsumable, it can be used in successive years with the purchase of new student workbooks and meeting books. This first edition Teacher's Manual is for Grade 3. |

 | Great Math System Sep 15, 2008 |
| Saxon has a great way for kids to learn and practice math. They review, and include all areas for daily practice instead of just a single subject per page(such as addition). This allows the child to keep each process in mind until it is learned and then becomes a review. | | | | great Sep 14, 2008 |
| I think this manual is great for parents that homeschool. because it is totally scripted it takes all the guess work out of teaching your child. | | | | Saxon Math 3 Feb 24, 2008 |
| Excellent gradients for students with lots of practice and drilling. Easy to teach without having to step out of this curriculum to help the students understand. | | | | Superb Program Dec 18, 2006 |
You will need more than just book. You will also want the workbooks and other parts of the kit. This is just the Teacher's Edition.
Having said that, Saxon Math program is very good.
It does not work straight through covering one topic until it is completed and then introducing the next. In other words it does not teach all of the addition facts and then how to carry and then introduce subtraction etc. It works in a repetitive manner.
This means your child will continually going back to review what has been already covered. There are short verbal and written assessments to ensure that your child continues to maintain what has been learned. One negative is that if you do find your child misses a section there are no directions on what lessons to redo.
It does expect you to memorize math facts. There are many reasons to memorize math facts but there is very little explanation about why you might want to do this in the book. The facts are presented in a logical formation and they also provide help in learning to solve math facts; such as the doubles plus one rule.
For a homeschooler this is a great book. It provides a logical method of teaching math. | | | | Don't let the word "kit" fool you! Feb 7, 2005 |
| This math curriculum is wonderful, but the description here is not very helpful. It is called the "Math 3 Home Study Kit -- Teacher's Edition. The Home Study Kit includes the student workbooks and the teacher's manual. However, if you order this item, you will receive the Home Study Teacher's Edition (teacher's manual) only. This is not a kit -- but it is a great way to teach math to your third grader. | | | Write your own review about Saxon Math 3: An Incremental Development, Teacher's Edition
