 | Learn about the eel and about the relationship between science and faith Jan 15, 2010 |
This is one of Moody Bible Institute's classic science videos. It was produced in 1959. Though the cinematography isn't up to 21st century standards, it's a worthwhile and enjoyable DVD.
We learn about the electric eel and see it in the laboratory. Plenty of analogies, examples, and demonstrations are used to illustrate the electric power that this creature harnesses. Particularly good was when the skeptics came into the lab and held hands and had the eel's shock distributed between them. They all jumped, and became firmly convinced in the eel's power! It was also fun watching it use its radar capabilities to catch fish. At the end, it was quite obvious that, unattractive as the eel may appear to many of us, it's a marvelous example of God's creativity.
Dr. Irwin Moon is a very enjoyable narrator. He's quite personable, seems very real, and has a very pleasant voice to listen to. In the latter part of the video, when he was addressing a question about why Christians don't apply the scientific method to God, he answered quite abley, but also came across quite humbly. Perhaps because, as he shares, he too was once skeptical of God's existence.
All in all, this is a worthwhile science DVD for the Christian family, especially the homeschooling family. Though not flashy like many of today's media, it has a worthwhile message and inspires wonder in God's creation. My children ages 8, 6, and 4 1/2 all enjoyed it, and could handle it at only 24 minutes of length. I would also recommend other DVDs in the Moody science classics series. This one is probably one of my favorites, along with City of the Bees | | | Write your own review about Experience with an Eel DVD
