Reviews - What do our customers think?
This is a bare bones history and overview of baseball for the young aficionado  Apr 18, 2009
There are all kinds of stories about how baseball began, one of them about Abner Doubleday, but this book bats away all those rumors and gives us the real scoop. Over a century ago in New York City Alexander Joy Cartwright "wrote a list of rules for what would become the game we now call baseball." There are many different kinds of games played with a ball and bat, but this one is probably America's favorite. In 1846, a 28-member team led by Alexander, played its first game in Elysian Fields.

This book covers the basic history of the game, the leagues, the rules of the game, rules and strategy, the equipment, training, and some famous innovators like Henry Chadwick, Babe Ruth, and Branch Rickey. Did you know that in order for a man to throw a batter out he had to "throw the ball at the runner and hit him?" Were you aware that players did not use gloves nor did catchers have protective equipment? It was a wild and crazy game before Alexander wrote those rules and players decided to protect themselves!

This is a very basic, bare bones book about baseball for the young aficionado. There is an assortment of photographs, sidebar materials, a glossary, index and additional recommended books and web sites. If you are looking for a brief overview of the sport for your reluctant reader, you will be satisfied. If you are looking for an in depth history of the sport, you will be disappointed.
