Homeschooler review  Aug 14, 2000
If you have a little boy who balks at reading, this would make a great first reader. The words are simple and repeated often, and there are suggested activities to go with each chapter that would appeal to little boys; building a sailing ship; making simple tools. The reader may get a little boring for an able reader because of the repetitiveness, but for a child who struggles it may give him some confidence that he can read, and if he is into survival skills, you can correlate those type of activites into the study to break up the reading. Also, I would suggest that it might be neat to keep a daily diary similar to what Robinson Crusoe did. Depending on the child's writing ability, you may want to have your son dictate as you write down his thoughts and words in large print for him to reread on his own later.
