Item Description...

New Economy Edition "Many parents I meet, " says John Croyle, "feel discouraged and defeated in their relationships with their children. They want to be good parents, but they don't know where to find that 'something extra' within. This book is meant to give you some positive principles that will help you find that. Then you in turn can bring out the winner in your child." Bringing Out the Winner in Your Child challenges parents to examine their skills, recognize their inadequacies, and love their children enough to make the changes needed to provide a stable, peaceful home. Croyle's life is an inspiring story of an All-American defensive end whose love for children prompted his coach, the legendary Bear Bryant, to advise him to "forget about pro football and follow your dream." In 1974 Croyle founded Big Oak Ranch as a home for abused, neglected, or abandoned children. Since then it has been a refuge and a natural, loving environment for more than 1,500 children from ages six to twenty-one. Croyle's practical guide to raising children encourages parents to develop skills as guardian, disciplinarian, provider, and friend so they can provide their children with love, stability, protection, and wisdom. His wide-ranging experience is the basis for his many lessons in dealing with typical parenting problems. Croyle offers such valuable insights as how children listen with their eyes (not their ears), how children and adults speak different languages, how realistic boundaries can affect children in positive ways, and how discipline with love, not anger, creates an atmosphere of growth and trust. His daughter, Reagan, was a four-year member of the women's varsity basketball team at theUniversity of Alabama. Croyle's son, Brodie, was the top-rated high school quarterback in America when he graduated in 2000, and in 2002 he was a quarterback for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

All kids can be winners  Jul 23, 2007
I met John Croyle a few years ago at a fundraiser for Big Oak Ranches put on by country music legends Alabama (done every year as part of their Fan Apprecation celebration). He was extremely cordial and very sincere about his life's work. In the few minutes we chatted my impression was that 'this guy knows what he is doing, and he knows he's doing the right thing'. This book very concisely expresses his values and opinions as well as genuine love and concern for all children.

My kids are grown and gone, now parents themselves. They were raised with similar values and responsibilites with very good results. I'll be passing John's book on to them.

This should be every parent's textbook  Aug 9, 1999
John takes the reader through his step by step process of raising a child to be successful. Over their 25 years of raising disadvantaged and abused children John and his wife Tee have changed the lives of many children in a positive way. This book will give you the gameplan you need to raise your children to be Winners. This should be mandatory reading for every prospective parent.

An absolute must for all parents, care givers, teachers, etc.  Nov 22, 1998
I didn't know what to expect from the book. Once I started to read it I was amazed how much I had to learn. I always felt I was making the right choices in situations where my children were concerned. This book helped me realize many of my decisions were right but there was so much room for improvement. I just started a new career in teaching. I am in a classroom with severely emotionlly disturbed children. The section of the book about boundries and how important they are holds great meaning for me. These children want someone to care enough about them to make those hard disciplinary decisions. It takes time, patients, love, and the will to want to help create a caring, responsible human being. This is too often more than most parents feel they can give. This book could put them in the right direction. I hope parents in need will read!
