 | Great book! Jan 7, 2009 |
| I read this book to see if it would be good to give the graduating seniors in my youth ministry. It did a great job explaining the college experience for a Catholic! I could definitely relate from my experiences! | | | | Trust in God's Love Jun 24, 2008 |
Drawing on more than 20 years of campus ministry, Father George Szews has identified ten issues that he believes every Catholic student at every college WILL encounter. In fewer than 70 pages, Szews briefly describes five challenges and five corresponding opportunities and offers bulleted suggestions for dealing with them constructively.
The opening section addresses challenges to Catholicism. "There are groups on campus that make it their goal to engage you at least once a year on the question of your faith in Jesus Christ," he writes. Their gatherings may be labeled "denominationally neutral," Szews warns, but they are no such thing. He then reviews the liturgical and sacramental characteristics of Catholicism and offers numerous points to help Catholic students think clearly in the face of this challenge. Opportunities for growing in faith include participating in Mass regularly and connecting with Catholic students and campus ministry programs.
Other challenges and opportunities involve morality, social justice, developing adult relationships, and dealing with problems and crises. Szews is convinced, after years in campus ministry, that "fewer and fewer students have learned how to solve problems on their own." He offers concrete advice for coping with difficulties ranging from minor issues to serious physical and emotional crises. In all cases, he writes, students need to pray, ask for help, and trust in God's love.
