Fun book for those who love engineering design and nature  May 2, 2010
"Discovery of Design" explored more than 79 examples of biomimicry--where humans have based technological designs off of mechanisms found in microorganisms, insects, flying animals (mainly birds), water animals (fish, whales, etc.), land animals (including a dinosaur), humans, plants, and even non-living things.

Some of the descriptions were more detailed than others. Some were potential or future applications while most where examples of already-in-use technology. The information was written at a level that a teenager could understand, and there was a glossary in the back for the few scientific terms.

Each entry focused on an interesting ability found in nature and then explained how humans have (or are trying to) create something based on that design to solve a problem or increase the efficiency of a current design. Black-and-white pictures illustrated the text. The book referenced where this information came from for further study (articles, books, or internet search words). There were also three "study" questions per entry that were related to the information in the entry but would require a search elsewhere for the answers. Or you can just look in the back of the book for the answers.

There is an intelligent design theme to this book with the Biblical God as the Designer, but that's not the main focus or purpose of the book.

Overall, I'd recommend this very interesting book to people who like engineering design, design in nature, and/or biomimicry.

I received this book as a review copy from the publisher.

Discovery Book Review  Mar 4, 2010
This recent book by DeYoung and Hobbes is unique both in its content and format. The book is filled with specific examples of design that occur in nature that have been copied by human engineers, architects, and scientists. The main part of the book is divided into eight sections, each focusing on one specific part of nature: microorganisms, insects, flying creatures, underwater life, land animals, people, plants, and non-living objects. Each of the sections contains several specific examples in nature that humans have used to improve life. These include the human femur, cockleburs, beech leaves, the octopus, and the kingfisher bird. The examples include a short description of the object and how it has been used by humans, questions for further study, pictures, references, and key words for Internet searches. There is also a helpful list of general references in the back, as well as a glossary and subject index. The book demonstrates that the amazing designs we see in nature, both from living and non-living things, point to the Creator of the universe. It is sure to become a favorite for both scientists and non-scientists alike.

Presents many intriguing ideas, be they coincidence or divinely inspired  Feb 12, 2010
Could much of human invention have roots in the natural world? "Discovery of Design: Searching Out the Creator's Secrets" discusses nature and its influences on much of modern technology. With a Christian influence, Donald DeYoung & Derrik Hoobs state that God's design lives on in humanity's creations. Even looking towards the future, "Discovery of Design" presents many intriguing ideas, be they coincidence or divinely inspired.

A great resource!  Jan 26, 2010

Discovery of Design is a book that is an easy read, yet very informative. Packed in-between these 233 pages are a wealth of information just waiting to be accessed. The eight fact filled chapters are set up basically by the division of animal, i.e. Microorganisms, flight, insects, etc. The basic overall topic of the book is how man has used nature to develop products for the betterment of mankind. From Velcro to Surveillance vehicles, it is covered in this fun and informative book. Each topic within a chapter is only two pages long, which would make this book a good choice for a different type of devotional. At the end of each topic is a set of questions, these questions are great for the student in your life. At the end of the book you can find the answers to the questions asked under each topic.
Being a teacher myself, I feel that this resource would be wonderful to use in a home school environment. And for the public school student, this would give them something to counteract the suffocation of anything that has to do with God and give them the tools needed to defend their faith in a challenging and increasingly anti Christian world.

The Delight in Finding Design  Dec 8, 2009
We shall fight in the air, we shall fight on the landing-grounds, we shall fight in the fields, we shall fight in the hills... but we shall acquiesce on the scientific front! "No," declare DeYoung and Hobbs. These authors fight on all scientific fronts, including cutting-edge research. This book delivers new scientific discoveries that demonstrate design in living organisms.

The authors furnish evidence for design within biological systems using:
- Stealth technology
- Communication science
- Nanotechnology
- And much more.

This work offers unique and startling evidence that chance plus time acting on matter fails to explain the design and information found in living things.
