 | Very Helpful Book for experienced knitter Sep 12, 2009 |
| This book is for experienced knitters only. The projects scare me, but I will probably try something. It is well written, but is more for creating your own style than anything else. There are many helpful suggestions and finishing ideas. If you're looking for a challenge and like Debbie Bliss, then you will probably like this book. I've learned to substitute other yarns for her projects because her yarns are just too expensive for me. | | | | disappointing Aug 30, 2009 |
| I love Debbie Bliss' designs. When this book came up, I wanted to be one of the first to make it my own. However, the book was a disappointment. It is beautiful: usable spiral binding on a hardcover. The patterns in the book are nice, but I was looking for insight into the design process. The introduction pages for each design segment are too short and superficial. I had hoped to get more information on what works and why, so that I could improve my own designs. This book delivered information that is available elsewhere (cheaper), and although there are 15 project patterns included, they aren't necessarily new. | | | | Not what I expected Jun 24, 2009 |
| I expected it to be more instructive, specifically to shaping and fitting. It's nice, has a few cute patterns, but it's 'design' component offers little in the way toward improving skillset. It will indicate that ribbing flowing into cabling can be flattering, but that's all it will say. Then, none of the patterns use the 3 or 4 little 'notes' that they say to incorporate into your patterns. It mentions a concept now and then, that sounds good, but never elaborates or incorporates it into any of the patterns. Very disappointed. I would have never purchased this book just for the patterns, they aren't special, I purchased for the content that the title eludes to, but fails to deliver. | | | | Deceptive title--a pattern book, not a design book Jun 21, 2009 |
I'm very disappointed in this book. Debbie Bliss is known for her wonderful designs, and a book by her about the design process would have been a delight. Unfortunately, this is more of a pattern book with a few brief notes on design. It really doesn't cover the nuts and bolts of how to design your own patterns. For that, you're better off going with books by Deborah Newton or Maggie Righetti. The patterns that Bliss includes are nice, and if you like them, that's a good reason to buy the book. But don't do it because of the title.
One more word of caution--this isn't a book for the plus size knitter. The size range doesn't go up into the plus sizes. | | | | Not what I expected, but nice Jun 15, 2009 |
This book is less how-to, and more of a long interview with Debbie. In some of the sections she takes you through her thought process as she begins and alters designs until she gets it right, but the information is not new. The patterns are beautiful and inspiring and for that I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 3. But I am a fan of Debbie Bliss and I was hoping for more. I will say that when she talks about her yarns she speaks of them warmly--they are her creation, afterall--and because she brings high quality yarns to the market for about the same price as many others I have no complaints, there. | | | Write your own review about Design It, Knit It: Secrets from the Designer's Studio
