Overview
The ultimate birdwatcher's handbook spotlights one hundred of the most important bird species from around the world, including both endangered and common avian species, and furnishes close-up full-color photographs and natural history profiles that document key characteristics, distribution, habitat, and conservation status of each.

Publishers Description
What is the fastest-growing outdoor activity in the U.S.? Snowboarding? Mountain biking? No. It's bird watching! There are currently 51.3 million dedicated birders in the U.S. with their binoculars focused on the skies. Sure to appeal to this growing flock, 100 Birds to See Before You Die is the ultimate birdwatcher's book.
• Selected by two world-renowned birding authors, the top 100 birds include avian species that are endangered, exceptional common species, and others that have achieved legendary status.
• You won't need binoculars to spot the huge and powerful, endangered Philippine Eagle or the brightly plumed Andean Cock-of-the-Rock. Each of the 100 featured species is captured in remarkable full-color photographs in their natural habitat.
• This fascinating book combines hard-working detail with more unusual facts and mythological anecdotes, making it much more than a typical bird watching book.
• Detailed entries describe the natural history of each bird, including size, distribution, habitat, classification, population and conservation status.

Intriguing and enjoyable -- good for armchair travel planning  May 25, 2009
Basics: 2009, softcover, 224 pages, 200 color photos of 100 species, one page of general natural history and a range map for each bird

I found this book to be more enjoyable than I anticipated. The good color photos and the selection of some very interesting birds make the book attractive. A side effect of this book was to pique my curiosity of "Which of these birds have I already seen?" A second was to stir my traveling fantasies and to think, "I'm going to finish this book by seeing all 100!" (Okay, that's unlikely.)

Out of a possible 10,000 species, the authors seem to have selected their 1% based on beauty and uniqueness of appearance, rarity or geographic remoteness, and remarkable behavior or life style. The authors have picked well, selecting a wonderful assortment of species that range from Bee Hummingbird to Golden-headed Manakin to Capuchinbird to Spoon-billed Sandpiper.

Each bird receives two photos. A large photo takes up an entire page with a second small photo inserted onto the page with text. Although a few of these photos could be upgraded, nearly all are top quality. A full page of text accompanies these photos. This page provides a general overview of the bird's natural history along with some interesting tidbits of information that make the bird noteworthy.

The bird's distribution is shown in a template of a global map, showing the outline of all continents. Although this large scale map creates only generalized ranges, it serves the purpose of reinforcing the minimal, and precarious, status of some of these range-limited birds.

This is a great book to compliment the field guides you might already have for your international birding. This book offers you the chance to read about the bird, to become more acquainted with it and, to tempt your traveling fancies of, "Where should I go next, to see the Crimson Chat or the Helmet Vanga?"

Entertaining and humorous guide for the birder who has not yet seen everything  Nov 25, 2008
A must for the world-traveling birder, this entertaining book features the world's most "extraordinary" birds, at least according to bird experts Chandler and Couzens.

With exceptional full-page color photos of species chosen for looks, behavioral interest and cultural impact as much - or more- than for their rarity, the book has wide appeal.

Armchair birders will enjoy marveling over species like the Sociable Weaver, a little African bird that builds the world's largest nest in gregarious colonies that sometimes persist for more than a century. Or the tiny, arctic Ross' Gull, which imitates rodents to distract predators and migrates north for the winter. Or the famous Wandering Albatross that takes nearly a year to get its only-chick off the nest. Or the gorgeous blue bird-of-paradise, the weird flightless kiwi, or the prehistoric, sedentary hoatzin that live waterside but cannot swim or walk and hardly flies.

The one-page text is crisp, humorous and informative, providing a clear snapshot of the bird's lifecycle, status and peculiarities. Each entry also includes a color-keyed distribution map and a heading with the basics - size, incubation and fledging durations, habitat, conservation status, etc. A species checklist concludes the book.
