Item Description...

We don't really know much about Calvinism," my dinner companions confessed. "But is was a strange experience. On the one hand, we had the impression that these people felt certain they were the elect. Yet there also seemed to be some insecurity, as though performance were a major difference of one's salvation." As we got up to leave, a young woman who had sat through the entire discussion in silence asked if she could have a private moment of my time. We sat down again, and she began to tell a tale of grief . She was a pastor's wife. Their lives and ministry had been happy and fruitful until her husband and two close friends, also pastors, became interested in a new "truth" All three were aspiring "intellectuals ." As a result of reading current Calvinist authors, they had been drawn to the writings of John Calvin, Jonathan Edwards, John Knox, and others. Their study, taking them all the way back to Augustine, eventually became almost an obsession . Then each of them began to preach this new "light" from their pulpits. After being warned several times to desist, they were removed from their pastorates. Eventually, her husband began to worry whether he was really one of the elect. The nagging questions grew into full-blown doubts about his salvation. Calvinism, which had once seemed so satisfying, now began to haunt him with uncertainty. Was he really one of the elect?"The above excerpt sets the scene for Dave Hunt's new 112-page paperback, created out of a need for a non-intimidating, easy-to-read "introduction" to Calvinism. Based on years of actual accounts and conversations, this "user-friendly" book is derived from material in Dave's much larger scholarly work, What Love is This? In Honest Doubts, readers will become familiar with the key issues in a unique format that reads like a real-life drama, because the characters are composites of actual individuals, and the circumstances are equally real. Discover the heart of a Calvinist "seeker" - and the surprising result of his quest for truth in this fictionalized but true-to-life dialogue: A Calvinist's Honest Doubts -- Resolved by Reason and God's Amazing Grace. This friendly, inexpensive paperback is enjoyable to read and great to give away. Must Have Primer on Calvinism!  Jun 22, 2007
This is a must have primer for Pastors, Elders, Deacons, and Church Staffers! Have you, or anyone you know, recently heard remarks from teachers in your church saying that certain verses in the Bible like John 3:16 don't really mean what they plainly say, and that one of the "Johns" (Calvin, Owen, Edwards, Piper, MacArthur) say they really mean something completely different?! If so, Dave recounts a similar true-to-life, but fictional account of a man who is unwittingly seduced by the intellectual elitism of Calvinism. Eventually he struggles to free himself when he prayerfully compares his salvation experience and Scripture, to this intellect-based system of man. Chilling and sobering to read... When your done, go on to get Dave's newly revised 3rd Edition of What Love is This? Calvinism's Misrepresentation of God (2006).

F.Y.I. the aforementioned 3rd Edition of "What Love is This?" includes, "A Calvinist's Honest Doubts Resolved".

Compelling Story on Weaknesses of Calvinism  May 28, 2007

I found this to be a very interesting and compelling story on someone who became a Calvinist, gave it great thought and had many doubts. While "Al" is a fictional character, this story is fiction based on fact. Hunt wrote it based on numerous conversations he has had with Calvinists. Al comes up with one question and doubt after another after converting to Calvinism. One example concerns the supposed inability connected with Total Depravity: "Why would God repeatedly appeal to men to repent if they couldn't? Why send His prophets day after day, year after year, pleading with the unregenerate Israel if they were predestined to rebel and go to hell?" (p. 80)

Another question is how could a Calvinist truly know if he is one of the elect when he continues to sin and when Calvin himself wrote that God is sometimes involved in "enlightening some with a present sense of grace, which afterward proves evanescent."

There are a lot of good points in this little book and its unusual format.
Read it, but then go on to more advanced material.

A FICTION book.  May 23, 2007
I was startled by the title of this book until I got it and realized it was a fictional dialogue. Until then I was baffled by why any Calvinist would go to Dave Hunt, of all people, to resolve any doubts. Not only is Hunt (even he admits) unread in the Reformers and Historical Theology, but his previous books show conclusively that he has no grasp of history either. If you're an Arminian, you'd surely want accurate information if you bother to investigate Calvinism at all, and if you're a Calvinist, well, you've read this sort of nonsense many times before. Either way this is a book without an audience, save for Dave's fan club, and they'll apparently accept anything he says without checking references.
