Overview
Disney presents Wilson Rawls' unforgettable classic story about a boy and his dogs, which has been loved for generations. Now all the adventure and simple wisdom of the cherished novel come alive in the all-new movie WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS. What 10-year-old Billy Coleman (Joseph Ashton) wants most in the world is a hunting dog. After two long years of hard work, he saves up enough money to buy a pair of redbone hound pups, and it¿s love at first sight! Before long, Billy trains "Old Dan" and "Little Ann" to be the finest hunting team in the valley. As the inseparable trio chase the wily "ghost raccoon" and confront danger together, Billy learns the meaning of loyalty, courage, and perseverance. Featuring songs by Wynonna and Alison Krauss, and starring Ned Beatty, Dabney Coleman, Kris Kristofferson, and recording sensation Dave Matthews in his film debut, WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS is a timeless tale of love and friendship that will entertain and inspire the entire family.

Dated version of a classic book  Oct 24, 2009
Where the Red Fern Grows was one of my favorite books as a kid and I watched this movie probably half a dozen times when it first came out. Coming back to it as an adult, some things hold up but problems are glaringly obvious.

On the plus side, I think the movie captures the period well. It's a great story and its essence comes through in the film version. The actor playing Billy is excellent, very believable and sympathetic.

But... the other child actors are *really* terrible from the younger sisters speaking in monotone out into space to the two bullies who mumble and don't react to anything when it isn't their line.

The camera cuts away from anything even remotely disturbing (in a movie about hunting!) making it hard to follow the action at critical points. I don't need extreme close-ups of animal butchery, but why make a movie about hunting if you can't film the action sequences or the climax in any way that makes sense?

What dates the movie the most, however, is its winsomeness (Chop down that tree Billy! You promised your dogs!) and its inability to adequately explain tragedy within the terms of the story. The attempts to console Billy seem absurd, even callous, to a modern audience.

I would strongly recommend the book to anyone who hasn't read it. The film version will entertain serious fans but it falls short of classic children's movie status.

This movie really delivered both in quality and promptness.  Sep 8, 2009
My husband grew up watching "Where the Red Fern Grows". I was able to find the movie and order it the day before his birthday. He actually got it the next day on his birthday. And the movie was as promised, in great condition!

Thanks!

Not what I was hoping for  Aug 10, 2009
This was my favorite book growing up and I've probably read it a dozen times. However, the movie was extremely disappointing. I know that is almost always the case when you like a good book the movie is usually a letdown. But this was really bad.

Not as I remembered  May 15, 2009
It was about 25 years ago when I first watched this movie. I had a Red-Bone Hound dog at the time which is what these dogs are. This movie made me cry at the time but now watching it so many years later, it has lost that emotion for me and seems very dated in the acting and scenery.
