Overview
Sixteen-year-old Princess Talia persuades seventeen-year-old Jack, the modern-day American who kissed her awake after a 300-year sleep, to take her to his Miami home, where she hopes to win his love before the witch who cursed her can spirit her away.

Publishers Description

Talia fell under a spell . . . . Jack broke the curse.

I was told to beware the accursed spindle, but it was so enchanting, so hypnotic. . . .

I was looking for a little adventure the day I ditched my tour group. But finding a comatose town, with a hot-looking chick asleep in it, was so not what I had in mind.

I awakened in the same place but in another time—to a stranger's soft kiss.

I couldn't help kissing her. Sometimes you just have to kiss someone. I didn't know this would happen.

Now I am in dire trouble because my father, the king, says I have brought ruin upon our country. I have no choice but to run away with this commoner!

Now I'm stuck with a bratty princess and a trunk full of her jewels. . . . The good news: My parents will freak!

Think you have dating issues? Try locking lips with a snoozing stunner who turns out to be 316 years old. Can a kiss transcend all—even time?

A Kiss in Time  Feb 2, 2010

In Ms. Finn's modern retelling of Sleeping Beauty, we meet Jack and Talia. Jack is a young, handsome, strapping boy living in the 21st century. Talia has been sleeping for three hundred years and upon Jack's kiss is awakened to a whole new world... one she could ever envision. Jack never thought that by escaping his tour group he'd actually find himself living a real life fairytale.

I thought this was such a cute, funny and really enjoyable version of the popular fairytale I know and love. I loved the fireworks between Talia and Jack. Their relationship was a pleasure to read about. It was not love at first sight, nor was it happily ever after from the get go. They both had their reservations toward each other... at one point they couldn't even stand each other. But what I truly enjoyed was how they both grew and matured and eventually their feelings toward each other blossomed into something much more meaningful. I loved experiencing the world through Talia's eyes - everything was new, shiny and electronic.

On a personal note, one other aspect that I found enjoyable - Jack is from Miami and soon they are on adventure through streets and places that I drive through on a weekly basis (me being a Miami-an and all). I couldn't help but love this in particular about this story.

I thought the ending felt a bit rushed, but with that said, I truly enjoyed how it all wrapped up. This is a fast, light read, and anyone looking for a sweet, romantic fairytale will definitely enjoy this.

Didn't Hit the Mark For Me  Nov 12, 2009
Like Flinn's other young adult novel I read (Beastly) this is a fairy tale re-done and modernized. In this case its 'Sleeping Beauty' and I definitely feel less of a Disney vibe from this (for some reason Beastly put me in mind of the Disney Beauty and the Beast, not the fairy tale itself). I do admit however that Sleeping Beauty was never a popular fairy tale for me growing up--it didn't seem like the Princess did anything at all, but she got herself a Prince. It seemed terribly unfair to me.

The book itself is broken up into 3 Parts--Part 1: Talia (before the curse), Part 2: Jack (before he broke the curse) and then Part 3 Talia and Jack (after the curse is broken), with Part 1 and 2 being told in first person from Talia or Jack's POV and the third part alternating back and forth between them.

At first Talia annoyed me--she really did seem like the obnoxious brat her companion, Lady Brooke, accused her of being. For instance for her 16th birthday she wanted the PERFECT gown to celebrate so her father orders in 25 different dressmakers to create 20 different dresses all in her particular size. She is very rude to most of them out loud and even worse mentally. I was kind of happy when she got cut down to size by the witch Malvoila.

Then I met Jack and any annoyances I had towards Talia went out the window. Jack is every worse teenage stereotype all rolled up into one (for much of the book at least). He's in Europe, on a vacation across the continent and all he does is complain about how its not all topless beaches and sleazy euro-trash celebrities in cafes. He's visiting all sorts of museums and while he's sort of interested, he's too busy trying to get to the topless beaches to really care.

The two of them together is humorous--its kind of a test of wills to see who can outdo the other in sheer brattiness. Talia at least has a decent reason--she's a Princess after all and let's face it traditionally raised royal children in fairy tales are not sweet, generous and used to trials. Jack seems to mostly want to embrace his inner angst muffin status and be left alone to sulk about his misfortunes and ruined summer.

In the end I wasn't as interested in this book as I was in Beastly and its style (I really did like the chat room sessions for all of the unfortunate transformed kids), plus with both leads vying to annoy me the most I didn't want them together. The world would implode came to mind a few times.

A good idea, but a dissapointing ending  Oct 25, 2009
The first thing that attracted me to this book was the cover. Hello, its gorgeous. The synopsis sounded promising, so I bought it.
This book had a great original idea! But it seemed in the last one hundred pages the author got tired of writing it and stopped trying. I love a fairy tale with a twist, and again and again I am dissapionted. Just like this one.
The characters develop throughout the story, but the end is too cookie cutter sweet. Its very litteral with happily ever after, because EVERYONE (spoiler) even the villian ends up happy. Ugh, who wants that.
I will probably never re-read this book, so thank heavens it will look pretty on my shelf.
This book has a pretty front and back, some good life lessons sprinkled on it, but if you actually look at the substance of the story you learn that it was half done.

Funny retelling  Oct 21, 2009
When Princess Talia meets her fate and touches a spindle on the eve of her sixteenth birthday, she falls into a deep sleep--like, 300 years deep. She wakes up to the kiss of a seventeen-year-old American tourist Jack--and he's the only person more surprised than she is. When her father blames her for the country's deplorable state, Talia flees with Jack to America, to face his fears, fight against the dangerous fairy who cursed her, and find love along the way.
A Kiss in Time was a creatively thought-out story, with many humorous moments and some good points made from something as small as the ridiculous societal views of beauty to something as grand as the universality of love or the power of forgiveness. Unfortunately, much of the character development didn't ring true, particularly in the case of the male protagonist, Jack. It often felt as though in an attempt to create a "realistic modern guy," Ms Flinn reverted to the stereotypical romantic-chick-flick version of a guy who has a lot of growing up to do. It was hard to believe that someone with such a depraved nature as Jack begins with could actually develop into a chivalrous, selfless young man by the end--and, frankly, portraying him as better than the average guy was rather insulting to young men in general. However, the story can be enjoyed for its interesting plot and funny depiction of what would happen if two cultures, three centuries apart, suddenly converged.

A cute retelling!  Oct 6, 2009
This was a cute story and an original and interesting plot idea, but I really didn't like this book all that much. I really had high expectations, but execution fell a bit short.

I felt like the characters weren't fully developed - they simply weren't very believable. More importantly, their love story (the main focus of the novel) wasn't very believable. I felt that both Talia and Jack's looks were focused on a bit too much. The comments about their physical looks might not have been so bad though if there was a bit more to go on though. Talia is supposed to be blessed with gifts from fairies, but I felt like the fairies may have messed up a bit.

I also felt like the dialogue was a bit stunted. Talia was supposed to sound like she was from a past time (300+ years prior), but instead she sounded forced and unnatural. Jack's dialogue sounded much more natural, but it still was a bit odd.
