| This was a very easy, pleasant, and nostalgic read. Full of detail, it chronicles the coming of age of a bright young boy in the Brooklyn, N.Y. of the 1920's - 1940's. It was a bit special for me because I grew up in many of the same neighborhoods as Mr. Rothman. For those familiar with New York City, it will rekindle memories. This book, though, will have a broader appeal as well. It will bring the same enjoyment that eastern urbanites have had, for over a century, in reading books like Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, and Penrod which depicted growing up in the rest of the country. | | |  | A Brooklyn Odyssey Oct 20, 2009 |
| Albert Rothman's picture on the cover of his autobiography says it all: full of life, beans, and the dickens. His amazingly detailed memories of a time before most of us alive on this planet were born were interesting, funny, and at times poignant. I now feel I know Brooklyn street by street and a lot about the games, boyhood collections, period treats - enough to write a novel about that time and place and feel I'm on solid ground. Mr. Rothman candidly expresses his feelings about his friends and family, allowing us readers to know them and him intimately. | I fell in love with this book as soon as I read that Albert Rothman was born in 1924, the same year as my late parents. I feel a certain kinship with him. Albert-- like my dad-- has a seemingly photographic memory for childhood detail. In an era that had few tape recorders and no digital or video cameras, we are left to treasure the oral and written history of "the greatest generation!" I love how Albert easily transitions from prose to poetry at various stops in his journey. The tales from the school room are particularly memorable. The black and white family photos are a treasure. | I highly recommend Rothman's tale about growing up in the depression years in Brooklyn. It is written with humor and sensitivity with his poetry added to his interesting prose. Albert Rothman writes with humor, wit and wisdom. The stories from his life are universe and heart-felt. The details of Brooklyn and family are poignant, funny and sad at the time. Very, very readable and very honest.
